Limerick City and County Council, in consultation with Transport Infrastructure Ireland, are working to progress the Foynes to Limerick Road Scheme.
This project, with an estimated cost of €430m, will involve 15.5km of dual carriageway from Foynes to Rathkeale along with the construction of 16.4km of motorway connecting Rathkeale to the existing motorway network at Limerick.
It will be a key enabler in the transformation of the Shannon Foynes Port Company as a logistics hub for the entire western half of Ireland.
The road will support the envisaged expansion of Shannon Foynes Foynes Port Company as outlined in the government’s National Ports Policy 2013 and its designation as a Core Corridor Port under EU regulations (Trans European Network TEN-T). The TEN-T regulations require a high-quality road connection between Foynes and Limerick, improving journey time, reliability and safety for all road users.
On top of the natural deep waters of the Shannon Estuary and expanding infrastructure at the port, it is a key link that will elevate connectivity from Shannon Foynes Port Company to the national road network and help realise the enormous potential of the natural asset of the Shannon Estuary identified in the National Planning Framework and the SIFP.
